The feature of Create a rectangular grid is used to generate a structured grid with two dimensions. Figure 1 highlights the Create a rectangular grid button in the main toolbar.

Figure 1. Create a rectangular grid.

The Rectangular Grid form (is shown in Figure 2) allows the user to select the cell size in meters, the growth factors, and the number of cells along the I and J direction. The user can also select UTM zone (Universal Transverse Mercator ) from 1 to 60 and Location of Focal Point with longitude and latitude coordinate (degree). It is also possible to rotate the grid by entering an angle in degrees in the Rotation box. .

  • Min. Cell Size: the dimension of the grid cell in meters along the I and J direction
  • Growth Factors: the expansion of the cell dimension in the I or J direction
  • Number of Cells: the number of cells to generate a new grid
  • UTM Zone: this is the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) zone, the user can enter the zone number, from 1 to 60. When the user enters the location of the focal point the UTM zone can be updated automatically.
  • Location of Focal Point: the longitude and latitude of the focal point in geographic coordinate system
  • Rotation: the angle in degrees to rotate the grid

Figure 3 presents the generated rectangular grid generated. When the grid layer in the layer control is selected, the user can hold the focal point to move the grid cell. When holding the corner point, the user is able to rotate the grid. The side point is used to extend or narrow the grid cell along the side.
